Laura Idarraga's rise in the tech world is a story of persistence, expansive knowledge, and the ability to adapt to new challenges. Starting off with a background in mechanical engineering, Laura has made a name for herself in the tech sector as a top consultant and project manager at Axial Solutions. We caught up with Laura to talk about her professional path, daily work, and tips for thriving in the fast-paced world of technology.
Laura, you’ve made quite a journey to your current role. Can you tell us about how you got to where you are today?
Absolutely. My career began in the field of mechanical engineering, where I acquired my skills in project management and worked on maintaining machines in the oil, gas, and pharmaceutical industries. This foundation allowed me to transition to the IT sector, where I needed to master advanced software systems. Currently, I’ve been immersed in my role with Axial Solutions for about ten months as a consultant leader and project manager. It’s a journey that has been both intellectually stimulating and deeply rewarding.
Great! What kind of challenges have you faced in your tech career, and how did you handle them?
The tech field is always advancing, so the biggest challenge is keeping up-to-date with all the new developments. I moved from a career in machine maintenance, which had its own difficulties, to one where I had to stay on top of frequent tech changes. My approach has been to continuously learn and adapt.
Can you describe what you do every day as a consultant and project manager?
My day-to-day work varies greatly. I guide clients through understanding and using our ERP products, present our solutions to potential customers, and ensure that the technology we offer meets their needs. It’s a role that combines in-depth tech knowledge, client support, and strategic planning.
Is there any achievement in your career you are particularly proud of?
Yes, one of the standout moments for me was when our team was recognized as the top 1Ci partner in Colombia. This wasn't just a personal win; it represented the collective efforts and dedication of our entire team. It proved our commitment to excellence and our capacity to deliver superior service that aligns with our clients' needs. This award reflected not just our technical abilities but also our collaborative spirit and client-centric approach, which are the core values at Axial Solutions.
Technology is constantly evolving. How do you stay informed about the latest trends?
I'm always on the hunt for new learning opportunities like online courses, seminars, and anything else that helps me get better at what I do. In tech, you can't just learn something once and be done with it; you have to keep learning all the time. This way, I make sure I know the latest and greatest in our industry, which helps me do my job better and come up with new ideas.
How do tech companies stay innovative and help their teams grow?
Innovation in tech companies comes from a culture that values and fosters growth and learning. It's crucial for companies to cultivate an environment where team members are encouraged to enhance their skills and are provided with the tools and opportunities to do so. By investing in the professional development of their staff and creating an atmosphere that encourages creative problem-solving, companies can nurture a workforce that's not only capable of handling today's challenges but also of shaping tomorrow's innovations.
What advice would you offer to people who want to start a career in technology?
My advice is to embrace curiosity and be prepared for the dynamic nature of the field. Begin by building a solid foundation of skills and don't shy away from the detailed, sometimes complex aspects of technology. Continuous education is your ally in this journey.
Moreover, apply your knowledge creatively to solve problems and innovate. Opportunities in tech are plentiful for those who are well-prepared and willing to apply themselves, so arm yourself with education, experience, and an inventive mindset. This combination will serve you well as you navigate your tech career.
